Duleep Criticises Step-Motherly Treatment of Associate Nations for Present World Cup

May 30, 2019

Rex Clementine

Sri Lanka was the first Associate nation to beat a Full Member of the ICC in World Cups when they overcame India in 1979. Duleep Mendis was their hero with a stunning 64 off 57 balls. He laments the lack of opportunities for Associate nations in the upcoming World Cup. ICC Cricket World Cups over the years have sprung quite a few surprises. There have been several instances of David overcoming Goliath at the sport’s showpiece event.

Sri Lanka overcame a star studded Indian side comprising Kapil Dev and Sunil Gavaskar in 1979 and two years later they were granted Test status. Zimbabwe argued their case well in the 1992 edition when chicken farmer Eddo Brandes ran through England’s strong batting unit. A few months later they were granted Test status too. Bangladesh put up a grand show to beat eventual runners-up Pakistan in 1999 tournament and that was good enough reason for then ICC boss Jagmohan Dalmiya to grant them Test status.

Contrary to popular belief, cricket has never actually been viewed as a religion in Sri Lanka. Decades of civil war, a devastating tsunami, soul-destroying floods, monsoon rains and now this latest terror bombing has reminded Sri Lankans that there certainly are more important things in life than a simple game of cricket.

Sanga laments Sri Lanka’s Chaotic Path to World Cup

May 26, 2019

Krishnamurthy in Cricket Age, 24 May 2019, where the title reads Sangakkara Laments Sri Lanka’s Chaotic Build-up to World Cup”

Kumar Sangakkara hopes Sri Lanka can somehow overcome their “chaotic” build-up to the World Cup thanks to new captain Dimuth Karunaratne’s “lack of baggage”. The 1996 champions head into this year’s edition in England as 9th ranked team in ODI cricket, which starts next week, having lost eight of their last nine matches — with the lone win in that run Tuesday’s rain-affected victory over Scotland, a non-Test nation who have not qualified for the World Cup.

“It’s been quite chaotic, both in terms of continuity in selection and giving players a very good, consistent run in the team, which is essential for confidence,” former Sri Lanka captain Sangakkara said at Lord’s on Thursday.
